—University of Canterbury, New Zealand

Innovative, tall timber framing has risen at the University of Canterbury thanks to the use of the Pres-Lam system. A fitting homecoming for the system as the teaching space was erected just a stone-throw away from where the concept was first tried and tested.

Peavy Hall

—Oregon State University, Corvallis, USA

Peavy Hall is a classroom and office building which acts as the nerve centre of the College of Forestry at Oregon State University. With a design that is focused on emerging engineered timber products, it was the first application of Pres-Lam in North America.

Sumitomo Fire
Laboratory

—Tsukuba Science City, Japan

What better way to dispel fears regarding the performance of mass timber buildings in fire than to design your own fire laboratory in timber? This is exactly what Sumitomo Forestry Co. LTD have done with their new Fire Laboratory at Tsukuba Science City, Japan.

Arts and Media Building

—Nelson, New Zealand

Built in response to the New Zealand Governments call for a showcase landmark timber building the Arts & Media Building of the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is the first of its kind. Constructed in Nelson, the building resists lateral loading through the use of coupled Pres-Lam walls. Gravity loads are carried by post and beam construction and a timber-concrete composite floor.

Carterton Events Centre

—Carterton, New Zealand

Built to fulfil the responsibility of the Carterton District Council to promote the social, cultural, economic and environmental wellbeing of the district the Carterton Events Centre was a timber engineering solution for the heat of the Wairarapa. The strength of the 300 seat main auditorium comes from the use of Pres-Lam structural walls which are topped by long-span LVL trusses and timber rivet connections.

Nikau Building

—Judgeford, New Zealand

When BRANZ sent out the brief requiring a contemporary staff facility to be built from sustainable materials the Nikau building was the solution. The first building to incorporate Pres-Lam structural frames, the Nikau building uses PTL timber engineering to create the open spaces required with a simple and straight forward connection, not to mention the added seismic protection offered by Pres-Lam in one of New Zealand’s highest earthquake zones.

College of Creative Arts (CoCA Building)

—Massey University, Wellington, New Zealand

Unique in its application of the Pres-Lam structural system the building uses post-tensioning to provide not only the connections between the beams and columns but also from the columns to the foundations. This is the first Pres-Lam building to use draped tendons to resist gravity loading.

Young Hunter House

—Christchurch, New Zealand

Providing timber engineering performance well above code level requirements the 3 storey Young Hunter House was the first Pres-Lam response to the devastation of the 2010 and 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. Situated on Victoria Street in the heart of the rebuild, three storey Pres-Lam frames support a timber-concrete-composite floor creating wide open spaces occupied by shops and business.

Providing an innovative timber engineering solution for an innovative company was the motivation for the choice of Pres-Lam and PTL’s services for the new Trimble Offices in Christchurch. The first Pres-Lam building to combine the use of frames and walls the new Trimble offices structure is also currently the largest Pres-Lam building in the world.

The new multi-purpose Kaikoura Civic Centre is open plan and versatile containing a first floor museum, a second floor library and council offices on the top floor. The first Pres-Lam building to be made entirely of timber, PTL’s innovations once again enabled the use of natural materials in spectacular natural surroundings.
